How often do you flush?

Don't be "that car" stuck on the side of the road with the passengers stranded in the summer heat while steam pours from under the bonnet.

Hot summer weather is not the only reason vehicles overheat though. Your engine gives off heat, a lot of heat, and it's the cooling system and radiator that does all the work to keep your car, and you, from being damaged by all that heat. Regular inspection and service of your cooling systems should prevent the majority of cooling related issues.

If your car seems to be running hotter than normal, is overheating regularly or leaves puddles where your park it is probably best to have your cooling system checked out by a suitably qualified mechanic.

Torrisi Automotive can check your radiator and cooling system and perform a cooling system service or radiator flush if required. Our qualified mechanics will properly flush your radiator, using a solution that removes build up. Once the cooling system is properly flushed, the cleansing solution is removed and fresh new coolant is added: a radiator flush might be just what your car needs to bring it back to peak performance.

Your radiator will run more efficiently and have an increased life expectancy. Your engine will run more efficiently and have an increased life expectancy. Get a boost in your car's performance and power. The water pump will last longer due to better protection and lubrication..

Your log book will recommend how often your radiator should be flushed, It is mostly suggested that you flush your radiator coolant every two years or 40,000 km's whichever comes first. However, your engine size, regional weather, the condition of your existing coolant, and the amount of km's driven all affect how often you should replace the coolant in your radiator.

Websites and How-To's are around offering advice on how to flush a radiator yourself - we don't recommend it. Modern vehicles can be complex and mistakes like incomplete flushing or changing the coolant in your vehicle without flushing can stir up even more sediment and cause blockages in your thermostat or radiator. It's wise have your systems inspected regularly by a qualified mechanic, and properly flushed before being refilled with the recommended coolant type, the system purged of any air pockets, and then the whole system expertly tested again to ensure full working order and to prevent any costly breakdowns in the future.

Radiator coolant is toxic and needs to be handled very carefully. It is also very sweet smelling which can be appealing to your kids and pets so proper storage is very important - having an expert take care of this job means not handling or having dangerous chemicals around your house. Dangerous coolant also needs to be disposed of in the correct way, professional workshops can have the coolant recycled or properly disposed of to save the environment.
